Terroir* Ink Paintings:

Signposts of Memory

This series explores memory and the meaning of material in the context of place and personal story. Abstracted landscapes are crafted using the artist’s handmade Terroir* inks whose ingredients are gathered from meaningful places. Because of their unique and unpredictable composition, these inks shift in unexpected ways, they granulate, they surprise, they blend in ways very different from commercial paints or inks. The final paintings contain both playfulness of experience and contemplation of the extraordinary moments in life. These are the stories at the intersection of memory and place; significant points in a life that impact and detail the very essence of personhood. It is the process of creatively combining materials with untethered memories that forged these paintings. Now the memories are more grounded, palpable, with fingers touching dirt, stone, flowers, snow, berries, recycled trash, shells. The paintings have become signposts, marking the way through a the experience of life.

*Terroir-a French term used in wine-making to describe the essence of a particular place where the grapes for the wine are grown. It encompasses a combination of natural factors including the soil, the climate, the topography, the water-table, the microbiome and even the human choices -our movements, the things we take and the things we leave behind.
